This cache is part of a series promoting Girl's skateboarding in Winnipeg, in honour of TechDeckPerson. Skate camps and other supports exist in Manitoba for young boys, but so far not enough girls have been identified to warrant much activity aimed toward them. That said, an US based group SkateLikeAGirl and the Manitoba Skateboarding Coalition have held a girls only event called "Chicks Flip Out" in July for the past 2 years, attracting skaters in their teens and 20s from around the world. So get out there and get your skate on... it's not just for the boys. Sadly, sponsors have pulled out so there will be no event in 2010.

This cache is a small lock-n-lock. The cache contains a number of Tech Deck fingerboards, a log sheet, and a pen.

From WinnipegSkateParks.com:

The St. Vital Skatpark is located at the intersection of Meadowood Dr. & St. Anne's Rd. next to the St. Vital Arena. It's a 11,000 square foot modular park built by Skate Concept. It opened in October 2003 and cost approx. $250,000 to build.

From WinnipegSkateboarding.com:

The St.Vital skatepark was designed by Skate Concept and made in 2003. The park features a bunch of quarter pipes ranging in size from 2ft all the way up to 6.5ft. It has 2 mini's (one 5ft mini half bowl & a 2ft mini) There is a plaza area with a few small hubbas, rails and box extension. The park also features a wall-ride and a few boxes at the far end.

CO's comments:

St. Vital is known for being a challenge to skaters not because its so hard in itself, but because for some reason it seems to attract a crazy number of bikes as well. Avoiding collisions is just annoying at the Plaza, at St. Vital its a life and death skill...

Congrats to Team-Kare-a-Cache on the FTF.

Logging Etiquette: Geocache hiders sometimes go through a great deal of planning to place their caches. As a result, they'd like to hear your feedback on whether you liked or disliked any aspect of the hide, or if you feel that some cache maintenance is required. Single word, acronym, or emoticon logs may be easier when you have a lot of caches to log, but it doesn't tell the hider or other finders anything about your adventure (or lack thereof) in finding the cache. Please keep this in mind when entering your log.

At long last, I was finally able to go after this cache. Any time I've biked past, I just felt ridiculously uncomfortable going into the area since I've never really been there, and generally didn't think I'd fit in. I'm a paranoid type individual like that. So time and time again, anytime I'd happen to be in the area with my GPS, the bystander density would be higher than my willingness to go after the cache.

Today, this would change. As it turns out, one of my old friends who I've started hanging out with more often is quite thoroughly into rollerblading. So much so that at this point he is apparently a regular figure seen on the halfpipes and whatnot at the skate park at the Forks. I knew he bladed, but didn't think he was up to the point of doing tricks and whatnot. Y'think you know someone...

So anyway, he called us up to see if we wanted to go blading (my wife has blades... I'd take my mountain bike), and sure, we're up for hanging out and see what he can do. We opted to go to the St. Anne skate park which he's been to only once, since it's too far away from his place to go to regularly, especially with the Forks significantly closer to him. Aw yeah, there's no WAY I'm passing up THIS opportunity!

So my wife and friend drive over while I bike along with my caching kit, and end up getting there at the same time as they're walking up to the ramps. After a few minutes of puttering around, I decided to take advantage of the fact that there was only two people here at that time and hunt for the cache. So while my friend was teaching my wife the basics of rollerblading, I hunted for a cache. I gave it a solid 10 minutes, but at that point felt I should get back to them, and gave up for the moment.

So about an hour of so of watching my friend do some tricks (he was a little uneasy since he's used to going on the significantly larger halfpipes at the Forks, and the smaller... well, everything here just felt odd to him) and as well taking my bike up some of the ramps, down the stairs or ramps, and up the side and onto the platform of that smaller halfpipe-ish thing on the East side, we started to wrap up. More people had shown up in the middle of all of this, and by the time we were wrapping up it had emptied out again to those same two original people messing around in there.

Since the other two were leaving by car, I decided to once again take another swing at the geocache before leaving. During the biking/blading, I had pondered how I may have gone wrong before, and where else I could look. Well wouldn't you know it, it looks like that thinking time was a good idea, because not 30 seconds after putting my bike down back there (of which I'm VERY grateful is nicely protected from view of the skate park itself... I think like multiple others who logged the cache, I avoided this one for so long thinking it'd be in full view of the skaters/bladers/bikers), I had the cache in hand BigSmile. WOOH! The opportunity of going to the skate park with a blader friend was not lost!

I had found it so fast in fact that I was waving the logbook at the car as it left the parking lot ToungeOut. A quick signing later, and I decided to drop in two trackables... one larger one that simply didn't fit well into my quite packed geocaching/survival bag, and a coin I decided to drop since it's on a race of sorts, and I didn't want it sitting too long in my inventory. As well, this cache seemed to be found quite often from the logbook, so I thought the coin would have a better chance of moving along here than some less travelled caches I may go after tomorrow.

All in all, thanks for getting me out to the park. This cache is at least partially responsible for me taking my bike to a skate park and taking it over ramps and whatnot... generally just riding it in a skate park for the first time ever BigSmile. Awesome stuff... I've gotta try this more often.

Took: Nothing
Left: Logbook entry, Green Lantern TB, Rhody Race geocoin, and chainmail ball
