World Cup 2010 - Group C

FIFA's World Cup, the premier international soccer tournament, will be played this summer from June 11 to July 11 in South Africa. This is only the end of a very long and intricate series of qualifying matches that have taken over 3 years and included more than 200 squads representing countries from around the world. 32 teams have advanced to this stage and will compete in a round robin (Group) stage and with the top 16 advancing to the knockout stage to determine the champion. It is one of the most anticipated sporting events and will also be the most watched televised sporting event in history with over a billion viewers expected to tune in.

So we'll a have a little competition of our own.

Group Stage:
This cache is one in a series of eight representing the eight groups of the round robin tournament phase. You can find them in any order you like. If you wish to be part of the competition, when logging your find include in your log the two (2) teams you think will acquire enough points to advance out of the group phase.
After the last group game June 25, I will tabulate the results and the top 16 cachers with the most correct picks will move on to the championship phase. In the event of a tie between 2 or more cachers, the earliest date of finding the last of the eight group caches will be the tiebreaker. If there is still a tie, the winner will be determined by a random draw.

Championship Phase:
Shortly after the last group stage match, June 25, the top 16 cachers from the group stage will recieve (via email) advance notification of the placing of the final cache. The race will be on.

World Cup Champion FTF - Certificate and Commemorative World Cup ball.
2nd - Runner up - Certificate.

Sorry, no FTF for the group stage caches.

When logging your find, include the top 2 teams from this group you think will advance to the knockout stages:

Group C

England
USA
Algeria
Slovenia

Please be aware that these are very high muggle activity areas. It may be best not to attempt some of them during weekday evenings or weekend days.
If there is a match being played, stop and watch for a bit. You may see some very good quality soccer.

Bring your own pencil.

Edit June 26.

Huh, looks like it's been quite some time since this geocache has been tackled. Actually a bit surprising, given the distinct lack of 'not available in winter' attribute. Eh, maybe a number of people tried over the winter or something but never logged DNF's or some such. That aside, to think that I went after this cache because I thought that it would have a better chance of a find than the others nearby due to no DNF's in the last four logs.

Why would I specifically avoid going after a cache if it had a DNF? The weather man, it's all about the weather. Today was supposed to be gorgeous. Today was supposed to be a day I would dust off my bike and expend some energy cruising around going after geocaches. It was supposed to be a day of... accomplishing stuff! After all, Saturday was beautiful, it stands to reason the weather can't change THAT much in one night.

Oh, how wrong I was.

So after watching it rain slush and sleet for 5 hours, I decided to say 'screw it', and headed out with my geocaching bag in tow. After meandering around the mall a bit just for the sake of getting out of the apartment, I decided to brave the icy slush coming down and tackle a cache... which brings me to here. My GPS indicates the last four logs were 'found', so I figured I'd go after it. I expected to be very cold and very wet by the end of a cache or two, so I planned pretty much to tackle only one today. I was accurate on all counts there.

Parking my car on the nearby street, I scope out the area before heading into the uncomfortably cold dampness. I'm very happy to see that since the cache appears to be in a rather... difficult-to-access-spot-if-the-field-were-in-use spot, the rain and earliness of the season was making this cache an easy grab (at least in the bystander aspect). Hopping out of the car, I headed over to the coordinates. Having found several other caches hidden in similar locations, I had a good idea of how I figured it might be hidden. With nobody nearby, I began hunting the more obvious spots, only to quickly turn up empty. Looks like this one’s going to put up a fight and make me get a little bit dirty.

I soon found a method of hunting in which I kept my water-absorption to a minimum, and my search coverage at a fairly decent level. I sincerely hoped that I’d be able to turn up the cache in this manner, since a more thorough search would mean exponentially more cold water soaking me. Thankfully, several minutes in, my hands came across the oh-so-familiar feel of a container, and I quickly had the cache in hand BigSmile. In no time flat, I had it opened and was signing the logbook. Although due to the raining slush, as much as I tried to shelter the container, some droplets managed to land in there. It was minimal, and I wiped away what I could, so hopefully nothing will come of it.

Of course, just as I was signing the cache, someone drove by, and stopped RIGHT beside where I was. I mean like… RIGHT THERE, the car door about 6 feet from where I was crouching. So I stay still, waiting to see if it’s perhaps another geocacher. But no, someone was dropping someone else off, and just happened to have horrifically bad placement. Thankfully, they either didn’t notice me crouching on the benches staring off across the field, or saw me and avoided indicating that they saw me. Either one works for me ToungeOut. They quickly drove away after dropping the person off, and I replaced the cache. Mildly annoyed that my waiting motionlessly caused me to get more soaked (my jacket sleeves were lying on the bench seats, which were of course covered in water), I was still glad that despite the miserable weather, I still managed to get a find out of it. As an added bonus, I’ve confirmed this cache is plenty good to find with winter fading into the background BigSmile.

Took: Nothing
Left: Logbook entry and chainmail ball
