A tad late on logging this one, my apologies. Although I wasn't all that particularly worried, since it's not even going to mess up the logging order on this site at all. Given the last time this cache had been found was in November, and here I am snagging the find in January, odds were fairly slim that there'd be many finders somewhere between my locating it and logging it. But... that said, to the cache itself.

Given I had the day off work due to New Year's falling on the weekend (and thus the day-off was pushed back to Monday), I had decided that I was going to go snowshoeing today. Sure, the forecast was indicating it'd be about -28 outside with the windchill... but much like when I was at Bird's Hill Park for my snowshoeing run before that, it doesn't take long for me to be working up a sweat no matter what the temperature. This time was no exception. Well... maybe I worked up a bit less of a sweat, but I'll get to that. Now, I had wanted to try finding another place to snowshoe, so I figured I'd give Assiniboine Forest a try.

So, I very quickly discovered after arriving that there are exactly two possible states of any given place you can be standing inside Assiniboine Forest at this time of year:
1. A trail with snow packed down so hard, you could drive a truck on it without sinking a quarter of an inch.
2. Bushwhacking.

There is no in-between.

I found myself quickly disappointed by the complete lack of snow to snowshoe on along the trails. I figured it would at least be somewhat like Bird's Hill Park, where the middle of the trail is packed from walking and soforth, and the sides of the trails are still soft and un-trodden on. I guess given the vastly more traffic that Assiniboine Forest sees at this time of year than Bird's Hill kinda takes care of that. From the very hint of the edge of the trail, it's absolutely packed down to cold concrete. Thus, I very quickly moved my snowshoeing efforts into the trees. This unfortunately has the side-effect of you being unable to walk in a straight line for more than about 5 feet before you need to weave and bob around the... y'know... forest. However, I managed, and slowly worked my way along, slogging through the snow. I couldn't really go for distance so much as I had wanted to, but hey... fun is fun.

After about 20 minutes, I decided to check the GPS to see if there were any caches nearby. Well whaddya know, a cache was sitting 15 meters away ! A scant minute later, and I found myself looking at what absolutely had to be the cache hiding spot. I quickly poked around inside, but found nothing however. Well, I found a tin can that was punctured and flattened to have been used for... umm... other purposes, let's just say. I figured for sure if such things have happened here not long ago, any container would probably have gone astray. Thankfully however, a bit more thorough a search led me to finally stumble across the corner of the cache container sticking out from the snow . Although someone may want to look into the location a bit... I think the object of the cache's hint is actually sitting inside the cache container when I found it .

But... one signing and chainmail-balling later, and I could continue on my way. I hid the container as best I could, basically making the location look identical to before I had showed up. Although, I imagine after the next snowfall, it probably WILL be identical. There wasn't a footprint before I got there, and... ok, well, technically there wasn't one after I left either, but there was plenty of snowshoe tracks . Awesome location though... kinda curious about if this was here before, or if the location was created for the cache. In either case, I could see it being really neat in summer.
