And we finally get to the final cache of the day. It's been quite a nice, long day of geocaching (and probably a longer time of logging the geocaches online ), and I managed to remove FOUR caches from my DNF watchlist. I added one other... but that's still a net loss of 3 unresolved DNF's.

I was really curious about this cache, and have been wanting to go back after it once the ice had melted. Especially since I drive down Jubilee every day to work now, until the bridge is done being repaired on Bishop Grandin. However, in the mornings I have WAY too little time to stop for a cache (I tend to wake up about 45 minutes before I need to be at work ), and after work I'm mentally exhausted and just want to go home. Today however was a beautiful weekend day for geocaching. Nice weather, not much wind, and I've been on a streak of getting over the 500 cache milestone, and clearing up a pile of unresolved DNF's in the process! It was just natural that I'd tackle this guy on the way home from all that.

So, off down Jubilee I went. A few turns here and there, and I found myself at a familiar setting. Well... not THAT familiar, since there wasn't a foot of snow on the ground . At least this time I managed to park a lot closer, since I was coming from the right direction. Hopping out of the car, I was greeted with what I think is my first bluejay sighting of the year. I've attached the picture I was able to take of it, but I couldn't get any of his blue back at all... he just kept on turning around in the branch to face me no matter what angle I tried to take the picture from . Ah well...

In either case, off I went to the coordinates. Once you get past that first tree-line, the ground is REALLY in rough-looking shape. Hopefully when it grows in with grass, people walking over it will flatten it down a bit or something... I dunno. The area as a whole was still quite familiar looking. A lot less white-ground, but since there was only a few inches all the trees were still familiar. I was REALLY curious as to whether I had been chipping away ice in the right place last time, so that's the first place I looked.

And whaddya know... it was indeed the correct location . If only I had a better way of chistling away the ice (while not punching through said ice into the container), I would have been able to find it back in winter. Sure, it would have been completely submerged in water, but it certainly would have felt like an accomplishment .

With the cache in hand, I opened it up and dropped in a chainmail ball. Mission accomplished, and the 8th find of the day. It's rare that I get days with that many finds in it, but it WAS an excellent day for geocaching. And to end it with a successful dinifra just made for a little bit more icing on that cake .

Thanks for the cache. It was entertaining to come out here for that unfortunate DNF in winter, but it was nice and enjoyable in the spring, too. Hopefully there will be more bluebirds around for others to see. Nice, easygoing bluebirds that don't just turn towards you so you can't see their colours .

No such luck on this cache this time around. Apparently this cache wasn't just right for find number 487.

Yeah, I know, that sucked. I couldn't work a pun any better into there at the moment .

But anyway... my bad for not checking the recent posts. Not that it would have deterred me from today's attempt, really. It's been warm today, the park didn't seem RIDICULOUSLY snowy, and I haven't been caching in a while, so a nice walk through a park would be nice one way or the other. That in mind, I parked just past the nearby intersection and wandered over. Initially, I followed what appears to be the most common path through the park, until I got close to the coordinates.

Before I go on... I just gotta mention; there seems to be some idiot who enjoys driving his car through that park. There's two sets of vehicle tracks going from the street to the North to the street to the South (or vice-versa, I suppose). Not terribly thick tire tracks either, so it's unlikely to have been a big truck that most jackasses who drive through parks tend to drive. Most likely a regular run-of-the-mill car. Driven by a jackass, of course. It's not like the intersection is a mile away... it's maybe 20 seconds by walking. WALKING! That's travelling at about 5 km/h!

Bah, sorry, people like that just irritate me.

Anyway, I worked my way to the coordinates and discovered a healthy layer of snow over everything, due to the tree and bush "fences". My first vague hope was to circle around and look in a more winter-friendly manner. No such luck... couldn't even see where anything could feasably hide that way. Next, I began to kick around in the snow (me of course wearing regular shoes, no gloves or toque, and generally being unprepared for any digging through the snow). I found a potential place, but quickly learned that after about 3 inches of snow, it was just a clear, flat layer of ice .

Checking cachemate on my palm pilot, I discovered that the last 'find' was from back in January. No lookin' good so far. The January find also implied a not-so-winter-friendly location... which unfortunately fits with my theoretical spot, or one of what could be a hundred more buried beneath the snow .

I figured I'd give it a shot. I had a pocket knife with me as I always do, so I tried to essentially cut a square of ice out from the potential spot I had run across. Thankfully, it was about 1cm of ice, followed by about a half-inch gap of air, followed by more ice (not entirely sure how that came about, really). After coldly removing the chunks of ice that made up the top layer, I chipped a few chunks out of the second layer. Unfortunately, all I found was water, leaves, and more ice. No such luck for me on this one.

Could be that it's deeper still, or I have the entirely wrong location. One way or another, it'll have to wait for another day it seems. Hopefully a warmer one .
