Come out and have fun caching while spending some time cleaning some St. Boniface park spaces.

This year we will be visiting 12 park spaces at or near the posted coordinates. Our event will begin with an orientation and end with a picnic lunch in Whittier Park. Garbage pickers will be borrowed from the City of Winnipeg Public Works Department as well as trash bags.

Cachers or caching teams will be randomly divided among the 12 sites. Once you have completed cleaning your assigned park space, you can make your way back to the picnic shelter at Whittier Park for a complementary weenie roast.

If you feel compelled to bring a picnic salad or a bag of chips to share, that would be grand. The weenies, buns, and condiments will be supplied. Also on site will be a hand washing facility and bottles of sanitizer.

  • Event Start: 10:00 am
  • Return to Shelter: 12:30 pm
  • Lunch: 12:45 - 1:30
  • Cache Challenge*: 1:30 - 2:15

Whittier Park is a very nice space with plenty of parking and room to run around. Remember to bring a football or frisbee as well as some folding chairs. There are picnic tables, but the shelter itself is not bookable and is first come, first served. So we will "squat" there as much as possible, but may need to share.

*Weather permitting. I have not completely fleshed out the rules of the challenge. But I will edit this listing once the game is finalized.

Riverbank Safety:
Some of the sites will be near the Red and Seine rivers. Please exercise caution when cleaning these areas. Do not expose yourself to undo risk and please keep a close eye on children. As the event date nears, the sites will be re-evaluated to make sure that a cleanup effort is not considered too dangerous.

Shut-In Efforts Encouraged!

Attendance at this event is not limited to those who can make it to the Winnipeg site. This cache is open to all MBGA members who take the time and put in the effort to clean a public use space in or near their community on April 22nd. Please identify the area you cleaned up when you log the cache. Including pictures of your efforts is encouraged. Lets all contribute some time and work together to clean up our natural surroundings.

Latest News...

April 16- I visited a number of sites over the weekend.
GPX File LOC File

Here is a Google Maps link of 12 sites. And here is a picture.

There are some sites that are a bit easier than the others. There is one location that requires some heavy lifting. The Public Works department has agreed to lend us some trash pickers as well as give us all the garbage bags we need. As opposed to last year, we will be leaving all the filled trash bags at the sites where they were collected. Where a garbage can exists, leave the bags there, and if not, please mark a waypoint so we can collect the bags later.

The CITO Challenge game has been worked out. I hesitate to give out too many details here, but it should be fun.

Tannasaurus will be assisting with entertaining the kids on site. She will try to have some fun activities planned to help keep them busy. I have asked the Festival du Voyageur if they would possibly have Fort Gibraltar open for us to look at.

I have a need for assistance in running the game as well as assisting in the food service. Please contact me through my profile to let me know if you can help out.

April 19th - There have been MANY helpful souls advising me of the forecast for rain on Sunday. There is no rain date for this event. I will be going at it rain or shine. Please dress for the weather, whatever it may be.

Food and drink
I will have drinking water available on site as well as some orange drink. I was unable to convince a coffee sponsor for the morning, so it's BYOC to Tannasaurus' muffin and cookie table in the AM. The hotdogs, buns, condiments and chips are ready as are plates, forks and cups. I understand there will be a few salads available as well.

Personal Hygiene
I hope to have 96 (!) bottles of hand sanitizer (donated by Wood Wyant) for Friday. The washroom building will be opened for us, but unfortunately Fort Gibraltar will be closed. You can try to take the Fort by force if you like, but the Voyageurs are a wily bunch, and if you get covered in pitch, don't come crying to me.

Tools of the Trade About 50 garbage picker-uppers pinchy-type things will be loaned to us by the City of Winnipeg, as well as tons of bags. It is suggested that you bring some gloves as I was not able to find a glove sponsor. Also, make sure you wear footwear that can get wet.

Well, that was an entertaining day. Me and my fiancee both went, and after arriving (on time, no less), we got our assignment. Originally, we had planned to go after Prosperity Park, but upon going up to the signup sheet, noticed that there was already 3 people signed up for that. So... we picked one that hadn't been selected by anyone yet at random.

Which brings us to... Lagimodiere Gaboury. I have no clue what a gaboury even is... but it appears to be very much like a park ToungeOut. T'was time to gather garbage for about two hours. We started at the waterfront near the entrance... and it's a good thing we did, because there was tons to clean up there. Spent a good solid hour on that small section alone. But... a lot cleaner now. The remaining time was more spread out as we wandered towards bushy areas, picking up anything caught in them. It appears that city cleaning crews tend to avoid those thorny, sprickly bushes. But a bushwhacker like me? NEVER! I plunged headlong into those burr-filled, sprickly-branched areas and cleaned 'em like there's no tomorrow! I've attached some pictures

Which brings me to some of the few vaguely interesting things we came across:
1. A car's alternator
2. A casserole dish lid
3. Half a frisbee
4. About 20 feet of 4 gauge steel wire
5. What appeared to be a discarded bum's shredded tent and decomposing jacket, conveniently in ANOTHER garbage bag
6. Countless shoes and gloves in various states of decay
7. A snow shovel (in Winnipeg? Wow, who'da thunk it ToungeOut)

After the cleaning, we gathered for some absolutely DELICIOUS hotdogs (what brand were those big ones? Those were AWESOME BigSmile!), a project-a-waypoint game (we came in about 7th... of about 10 ToungeOut), and managed to sneak off and find a nearby geocache (Whity Cache) to boot! All in all, a fun, beautiful day to be out with other geocachers BigSmile.

As a final note, this was also officially the first stop of my newest travelbug... the Trabnagian Travelling Tradeable Travelbug. Wagonmaker has stated that they will help it wander all the way over to Vancouver to travel out there Smile.

Took: About 2 large garbage bags full of garbage out of the brush
Left: My name spray-painted on the grass for the project-a-waypoint contest ToungeOut, and a chainmail ball... which was left Ziplock TC to travel outside the province Smile.

Aight, it's confirmed... I'll definitely be there, and my fiancee is coming with. Hooray BigSmile! Don't know about exactly at 10:00, but it should be around there, or very shortly thereafter. Might as well take the new TB out to show people too.

Will definitely ATTEMPT to go there, but at this point, it depends entirely upon my job-situation at the time.

I'll cross my fingers, anyway.
