This cache marks the first of my slow migration from finding all of the caches on the West Beach area towards the East Beach. Course, with the West side cleared out, I don’t have too many options left for my trips to Grand Beach. Looks like for most of the remainder (with the exception of the nearby ‘Wild Wings’ cache) will be in the camping area though… but my wife and I have been wanting to camp there for a weekend for some time, so that works out well.

But on with this cache! We had spent the day (well, from 3:00pm on… we woke up late since we have the week off ) at Grand Beach playing in the water and soaking up the sun (and in my case, playing in the sand with a shovel for much of it, since I’m basically a kid at heart). I planned to tackle some geocaches in the area, and to my surprise my wife (who’s a non-geocacher, despite my best efforts to convert) was not only for this, but was even driving! Hey, can’t go wrong. So after getting our fill of the beach, we headed off somewhere around 7:00pm, and headed for some caches. I first tackled one closer to town, and then we headed over thisaway since I’ve been eying these caches in the ‘middle’ area for as long as I’ve been geocaching at Grand Beach. I had at one point kinda attempted to paddle here from the West beach area, but abandoned that when the wind decided that I shouldn’t get across. Today however, the car would take us.

One quick drive later, and we found ourselves at a trailhead leading to the cache. Mental note though… I’ve got to sometime take my bike out here and follow this trail, see where it leads. It looks pretty thoroughly packed enough that biking on it shouldn’t be too much of a problem, and I’m pretty curious where it leads to. However, with my wife waiting in the car, I decided it probably wouldn’t be a good idea to go hiking off for god knows how long . Thus… just the basics… find geocache, return to car.

I started out by as per what seems usual with me (only when walking South though) steering myself towards the wrong side of the path. After hunting on the wrong side for a minute, trying to figure out how a cache could possibly even be hidden there (and almost stepping into the boggy looking water), I realized my mistake and headed in the right direction. Once I was actually looking at the right place, the location of the cache seemed somewhat obvious, especially with the… umm… somewhat unnatural manner of its natural camouflage. Sure enough, a scant few seconds later I had the cache in hand. However, it turns out there would be a bit of an added difficulty in signing the cache… mosquitoes.

MAN was there a ton of mosquitoes out. Guess this area is good breeding ground for them. It had cooled off enough outside for them to come out, but not gotten too cold (with this summer? HAH!) for them to go away. I was at their mercy!

After stepping about 10 feet away where the mosquito count was ever so slightly less, I quickly signed the logbook and dropped in a chainmail ball. I didn’t even really look though the contents for speed, but thankfully it doesn’t look like there was any travelbugs in the cache for me to have missed moving along. I hid the cache as best I could with the natural camouflage that was available, but it ended up looking pretty much identical to how I found it (which explains… well… the camouflage how I found it ). With that, I quickly bid farewell to the mosquitoes, and we headed on our way home.

Thanks for getting a cache out here and letting me know of the existence of this walking path… definitely going to have to explore it sometime. Or just the area in general, but this path is basically screaming for me to try biking it sometime. Hopefully when it’s not +200 degrees celcius out like it’s been lately .
