It is just off one of the clearings overlooking the lake. This is an easy cache to get to for all ages. This cache is placed in memory of my in-laws as well as my parents. The cache is off the opening my farther in law helped clear back in the railway days when the cottage area was just for tenting. He maintained that clearing up to his passing and was a favorite spot of his and his wife’s. After their passing, their children erected a memorial bench to commemorate what this area meant to them. Back in the 30’s, my farther in law and his friends called their group the “Wahoo boys”. Apparently back then they were well know in the cottage area and were known to have the odd Keg shipped out on the “moonlight special”. The inscription on the memorial bench suggests they are all back together again. After his passing, we found a “Wahoo song” they had written which was sung to the tune of Home On the Range. In the cache you will find the opening verse on cards, which you are welcome to take. The meaning of “coming down” on the bench is in reference to my mother in law. After settling down the family she would sometimes enjoy a glass of wine with friends. So after finding the cache, have a seat ,admire the view of the lake, and image the Wahoo boys trying to tap a key and the wives finally getting a brief chance to relax. AH, life at the beach. In the cache, along with the Wahoo song cards there is a collection of trinkets to exchange.

Finally got this cache off my ‘to-do’ list. It’s bee just over a year that this cache has haunted my memory thus far. Back on August 10th of 2010, I had gone on a mass caching of the area, tackling Ghost Beach amongst all of the ones in town itself. All except this one. I had attempted it of sorts, however at the time the presence of two people cuddling on the bench nearby severely hindered my going after it. I abandoned the attempt that day, and haven’t had the chance to go after it again. Or more accurately, was spending too much time on the beach itself during the day, and was too tired and/or I was with non-geocaching friends (ie: any of my friends, despite my best efforts to convert them ) and didn’t want to hold them up.

Today however, that would change. Today was originally planned to be a Grand Beach outing with my family-in-law (is that a valid term?) and spend some time relaxing on the beach with them… but it turns out they had to bail on us at the last minute, so it was just my wife and I… and at least she’s a little more accommodating to my geocaching. Thus, after several hours of general beach-going, we headed off to finally tackle this last in-town cache. Heck, my wife even drove! So after weaving around a bit from the beach to here (man this town has thin roads… didn’t even realize that since I was on foot last time caching in the area), my wife parked the car nearby and I headed towards ground zero.

At first I took a few wrong turns… I tried accessing the cache from by the bench North of the coordinates, but after going down to water level and back up again, I determined there wasn’t (that I could spot) any convenient access. I soon found my way to the Southern bench, at which point several locations through which I could access the area were visible. And thankfully, there was a single person in the area, who was in the process of walking away from it when I arrived . With the area devoid of people, I quickly worked my way into the trees, and a scant few moments later found myself looking at what could only be the cache hiding spot. This was confirmed moments later, and the cache was in hand.

Opening up the cache and poking around, I soon realized that I would have to move at least somewhat quickly on this one. Although it wasn’t quite bad yet, it seems as though the mosquitoes had detected my presence, and must have started calling their friends over. Thankfully I’m not particularly susceptible to their saliva. But still… probably for the best if I don’t have a liter of it pumped into me . One quick signing later, and I tossed in a chainmail ball. Finally… it’s been over a year that I’ve been looking at this waypoint every single time I bring my geocaching kit to the beach (which is every time ), and now I can finally rest more peacefully knowing that it’s finally been found .

Thanks for the cache near a ridiculously beautiful view of the lake (see pic, which was taken from the North bench). If we weren’t so tired from a day of swimming and lying in the sun, I think we would have chilled on the bench here for a while and watched the calm water for a while. But alas… my wife wanted to get home, and I myself was getting pretty tired as well. Another time perhaps. And hopefully soon I will be able to go after your other caches, as my next Grand Beach caching will be taking me in to the camping portion of the park .
