Fairly easy to access during the snow free months. In winter it might be a challenge to drive to the cache. In the late 1800s, the province of Manitoba undertook the drainage of most of its large wetland areas due to the land passing from the Dominion to the province. The Land Drainage Act was passed in 1895 and drainage activities flourished in the province. Approximately two million acres of land were drained as a result of these activities. This had a negative impact on wildlife populations, especially those who rely on wetland habitats such as waterfowl and frogs. In the early 1970's, in a large conservation effort to help reverse the trend of declining wildlife populations, the Manitoba government purchased some land back from the landowners and converted it back into wetlands with the help from Ducks Unlimited Canada. Today, the Oak Hammock Marsh flourishes with wildlife and some good example can be found in the channels at this location. Many systems were integrated to manage the marsh. Creeks were diverted and many large structures were installed to adjust the water levels throughout the wetland. This area is called the Wavey Creek diversion and you can see the large culverts used to divert water from the creek into the different sections of the marsh.

I actually did have quite the unexpected confusion at this cache. I don't believer there was much in the way of 'diversion', but at least the confusion half I got down . After quickly working my way here from the nearby 'Raptors' cache a bit to the North, I once again parked my car and headed out towards the coordinates. Thankfully, at least with this cache had partial roads prior to the barriers that I was able to pull my car onto to avoid blocking the road a lot better. Not that it really made much of a difference in the long run, since not a single vehicle went by while I was searching. When I LEFT the cache a truck carrying two people and a riding lawnmower in the back went by (I assume to tidy up the grass in and around the parking lots or some such), however during the time I was here it was free and clear.

But hopping out of the car, I looked to the right, seeing that there was a bit of a pool (with not one, but MULTIPLE warnings indicating that the water here was quite deep). Working my way to the South end of the pool, I looked at the bit of land on the other side, wondering how in the world a cache could be hidden there. It's not like there's... well... ANYTHING over there that could hide a cache… it would essentially have to just be lying on the ground! So stepping onto the grass past where the edge of the water stopped, I found the numbers on the GPS abruptly begin counting upwards.

*sigh* Turned the wrong way again .

Turning around, I worked my way towards what would far more obviously seem to be an area with more geocache container potential. I first started out searching a little bit too soon, and after circling around various rocks and finding nothing, I continued my hunt onwards. As an added bonus, I had the sound of running water the entire time I was here thanks to the amplifying effect of the culverts. So with the pleasant sound of rushing water in my ears, I quickly worked my way to the coordinates. I did spot a rock nearby that had the letters ‘MK’ either chalked or painted on it… damn vandals. It just reminded me of the game ‘Mortal Kombat’ if nothing else though (the most recent one for PS3… called simply ‘Mortal Kombat’ is indeed awesome on that note). But I’ve gotta say though… the cache was hidden in a rather… unusual manner. I’m not 100% sure if this is where it’s supposed to be, since the coordinates seemed to be about 10 meters off for this one, while it was virtually dead on for all the others. But find it I did, one way or the other. A quick signing and chainmail balling later, and the cache was replaced as found and I was on my way back to the car.

At this point however, I’m planning to slow down my geocache finding quite significantly. For one, I’ve got to log all of these caches (although this is 7 of 9 at this point), and for two I want to leave lots of these caches to give me a reason to head back here multiple times in the future! I could easily have used this area to beat my old one-day record of 15, but I’m quite fine with leaving that record stand. If I happened to stumble across another cache or so while wandering other various trails closer to the interpretive center, good. If not, still good. One way or the other, I’m quite pleased with the finds so far up here .
