In the late 1960's and early 1970's, the Provincial Government acquired 3,450 hectares of land from local landowners with financial help from the federal government's FRED program (Fund for Rural Economic Development).� In 1972, with the assistance of Ducks Unlimited Canada, Manitoba Conservation began constructing 22 kilometers of earth dykes to restore a small portion of the original marsh.� <p> Construction was completed in the spring of 1973, and the restored marsh and surrounding upland areas were officially designated as Oak Hammock Marsh Wildlife Management Area (WMA).� The WMA is 3,581 hectares or approximately 3600 hectares (36 square kilometers or 8,896 acres or 14 square miles) in size.� It is operated by Manitoba Conservation. <p> This cache will help you discover one of the outlets of the marsh: Wavey Creek.

Ahh... time to begin the adventure. Today was planned to become quite a cache-filled day, and I decided to tackle the North portion first. I however started the day by visiting the Oak Hammock Marsh Interpretive Center, whereby I met OHMIC in his namesake territory. After a bit of friendly greeting, he gave me some tips of where parking is and approximately where geocache conglomerations were located. With that bit of info, I headed off to the North. At first I was planning on just leaving the car parked by the interpretive center, but since I lacked a bike, and going with OHMIC’s suggestions of parking lots, I soon discovered from the drive that this would have been a looooong walk. Perhaps on a less humid, less sunny, less mosquito-and-horsefly-filled day it’d be fine, but today… methinks it’s best if I drive to the far corners.

Several minutes of desolate road devoid of any other human life later, I found myself nearing the coordinates. I decided to skip over all of the other caches along the road for now, since I didn’t want to try to completely wipe out the marsh area in one day. I wanted to leave some caches for me to come to on another day, I only had a limited number of chainmail balls with me (I had actually run out of the regular sized ones, so I made about an hours-worth of them before heading out today), and of course I have to go about logging all of these after . Since I didn't want to double-back from the parking lot, and there wasn't even the slightest soul to be seen as far as the eye can see, I figured it'd be fine if I just parked temporarily near the coordinates.

I'm not entirely sure what to make of the name of this cache. I understand well enough that the creek beside which this cache is placed is indeed called 'Wavey Creek', however from my perspective near the cache, the creek itself appears to be distinctly not wavey even slightly. In fact, the term 'straight as an arrow' comes to mind . That aside however, it took me a minute to find a way to get past the massive wall of weeds and plantlife that blocked my path to the cache. MAN but that is a dense wall of weeds. I worked my way around it, and soon found myself at the coordinates. It only took about 30 seconds before I had spotted the cache and snagged the logbook. A bit of poking around inside the cache showed me nothing I felt like trading for, so I just continued on with the usual. One entry and one brand new chainmail ball later, and the cache was closed up and ready for the next cacher. In retrospect, I had at this point a small geocoin I needed to move along, but had completely forgotten about it until later. No worries I suppose, it ended up in cache 3 of the day .

I attempted to get closer to the creek at this point purely for the sake of seeing if it was even slightly wavey in either direction (I could only see North for a distance), but since the grass was so high that I couldn’t see where the edge of the creek was, I figured it would be best for me to not push my luck. Heading back to the car, I hopped back in, and was quite pleased at the so far successful beginning to a long, hike-filled day .
