This is only the end of a very long and intricate series of qualifying matches that have taken over 3 years and included more than 200 squads representing countries from around the world. 32 teams have advanced to this stage and will compete in a round robin (Group) stage and with the top 16 advancing to the knockout stage to determine the champion. It is one of the most anticipated sporting events and will also be the most watched televised sporting event in history with over a billion viewers expected to tune in. So we'll a have a little competition of our own. Group Stage: This cache is one in a series of eight representing the eight groups of the round robin tournament phase. You can find them in any order you like. If you wish to be part of the competition, when logging your find include in your log the two (2) teams you think will acquire enough points to advance out of the group phase. After the last group game June 25, I will tabulate the results and the top 16 cachers with the most correct picks will move on to the championship phase. In the event of a tie between 2 or more cachers, the earliest date of finding the last of the eight group caches will be the tiebreaker. If there is still a tie, the winner will be determined by a random draw. Championship Phase: Shortly after the last group stage match, June 25, the top 16 cachers from the group stage will recieve (via email) advance notification of the placing of the final cache. The race will be on. World Cup Champion FTF - Certificate and Commomerative World Cup ball. 2nd - Runner up - Certificate. Sorry, no FTF for the group stage caches. It may be best not to attempt some of them during weekday evenings or weekend days. If there is a match being played, stop and watch for a bit. You may see some very good quality soccer. Oohh, this appears to be a fairly new cache! I'm always kinda glad when I can manage to make it out to a new geocache within the first few weeks of it being placed. There's always the vague hope of meeting another geocacher in the field. Unfortunately however, I didn't cross paths with any other cachers today (unless they decided to wait until we had left or something).

So my wife and I were out for a walk on this gorgeous day. She had just cracked the difficult nut that was the "Up or Down" cache nearby, but we were still wanting to walk for a fair bit yet. Thankfully, ye olde GPS told me that the geocaching adventure was not over, for there was another one in the direction we were headed . Heading down the walking path that cuts along the edge of the (assumingly soccer) field, I kept looking at the GPS, waiting for it to get close since I figured the cache would be somewhere very close to the path. I hadn't read the cache description or anything beforehand, so I was going in pretty blind here. Eventually, we were starting to walk alongside the golf course, at which point I figured that I had to have made a mistake in my estimates. Turning around, and noticing that on the GPS the waypoint sat just off to the edge of the 'park (aka golf course)' shading on the map, figured it must be right close to the fence somewhere.

Me being... me, hopped over the fence once we reached the 'YMCA' side again, and jogged over while my wife decided to take the more sensible route of walking around and meeting me at ground zero. Pretty much right once I hopped the fence into the field, I figured the approximate area where it would be hidden. Having found a similar cache hide in the past, I figured I'd have at least somewhat good odds of being able to locate this one was well. Let the hunt begin!

I started off on top of things, hunting around slightly, but moreso trying to find the closest point to ground zero that I could before going below decks. I figured that my signal would be somewhat scattered for the main search, so getting the gist of where I should be when I still had a good signal seemed like a good idea at the time. In the end, it didn't really help all that much . Having figured approximately where to begin the search, I headed below.

Thankfully... I'm a scrawny twig. As such, I had no problems working my way to the underside. I suppose I could have technically gone around or whatnot... but eh, less chance of woodticks finding their way into me from this direction. Also, again... scrawny twig .

At about this time, my wife was almost at where I was, so she decided to play it cool on the outside and relax while listening to her MP3 player. The hunt began in earnest, but everywhere I looked or poked my hands, I found nothing. Well, at one point my hand found a rather large-feeling spider nest... which was less than pleasant . That aside however, I found zip. I hunted every crevasse I could find, yet still the cache eluded me. Checking previous logs in my palm pilot, they were unfortunately of no help. The cache is a 'small' size however, so I adjusted my search methods slightly, since much of my previous search was in 'micro' mode.

After about 5 or 10 minutes, my wife was starting to get bored. Just at that moment however, my eyes spotted that which I'm surprised I hadn't spotted earlier! Seriously for a cache this size that's an awesome hiding spot. It's strangely obvious once you see it, but almost invisible until you actually DO see it . One signing later, and I was pleasantly surprised that the "Akumal Paul" travelbug fit inside .

So thanks for the cache! It was definitely a fun diversion from the walk, and was a fun one to go after .
