This one put up a bit of a fight to find. Been quite a while since I've had the opportunity to geocache in Carman as well. Course, since this one was placed like... last year, it apparently just means I need to visit Carman more often . Been out a few times since then, but I guess I either didn't have my GPS at the time, or forgot to update it, or didn't have time or some such. In either case, the beautiful weather out today made for some excellent geocaching with my brother in law and nieces, team Blagden.

This particular visit to Carman as... given the date... expectedly for Thanksgiving (since we're going to my wife's parent's place tomorrow). Well, it's pretty safe to assume what was on the Blagden's mind when I showed up... I had arrived for all of 2 minutes before talk started of if there's any new caches in town, and when are we leaving to go find them . However, I had anticipated this and was thus already prepared for heading out for the several new geocaches that were in town. Upon stepping out of their house, I noticed that three of them were all several hundred meters from eachother (as the crow flies), and so since it was such a nice day out, we decided to hoof it.

So with this cache being less than 300 meters from the house, it was the first on the list. Only a few short minutes of walking later, and we found ourselves nearing the general vicinity of the coordinates. At this point, everyone fanned out and began scouring everything for signs of a cache. Given I hadn't looked at the description or anything, all I knew at the moment was the cache name, type, and size. We fumbled around for a few minutes, scratching our heads trying to figure out where the cache could possibly be, given the vast number of possibilities. After a little bit, I cracked open my palm pilot to check for any other useful information in either the first 5 logs or the description/hint. Knowledge of the actual container came in handy to an extent, but moreso was the cache name actually. However, none of the above helped us narrow down the search much more than I had already surmised when we walked up to begin with. Naturally, the season made things extra interesting. It can be good, in that if the cache is higher up, the significant lack of leaves would help with locating it. However, if it's lower down, those same leaves could severely hinder the search. I'll try to avoid any spoilers as to what direction the eventual find ended up being in. In all actuality, our greatest enemy seemed to be my GPS itself, that kept bouncing us around back and forth and here and there.

We were starting to get a little close to giving up on this one. With the GPS not playing nicely, and the absolutely rampant mosquitoes biting everyone at every possible moment, our hopes were starting to drop on finding this one. All of my 'normal' hunting techniques were falling flat... although most of my most reliable ones involve being still for a long time... which wasn't very possible with the mosquitoes. And then out of the blue, while hunting around, I accidentally moved something that I hadn't even been meaning to. Suddenly out of the corner of my eye, something... not natural caught my attention. Lo and behold, the cache was found! All of us were quite amazed at the camouflage job . Very tricky... the hint certainly fits, I'll give it that. Too bad I could only realize the hint's usefulness after having found the cache already ,

Signing for both myself and Blagden, we replaced the cache as close to exactly how it was when found, and headed on our way. I don't know if 'mom' was watching us, but if she was, I hope she got a good show of us being completely baffled by the cache for so long.
