Found it 7/26/2009 by Kabuthunk
Ahh, at long last. I noticed that you had been replaced, but various things hindered a faster dinifra by myself (such as laziness, procrastination, etc ToungeOut). However, today I had been stuck at an in-laws day-after-wedding lunch-dinner which basically lasted all day. However, after slipping out at 7:00pm-ish, we found a different cache, wandered around a park for a bit, but weren't quite satisfied with having done enough to recover an entirely blown beautiful day. Thus, since my wife Laura didn't want to drive any more after leaving King's Park by the U of M, I took the wheel, and decided to go after this geocache BigSmile.

Heading onto Pembina, she asked me where it was located. Just going from memory, I told here "it's just off Pembina, by Corydon or something like that. I'll know it when I see it". That was all fine and good for a bit, and then somewhere around Stafford, she once again asked me where it was.

"It's just at Pembina and Corydon. I think it's Corydon.... the one that goes to Assinaboine Park".
"What, it's at Confusion Corner", she replied?
"Oh... wait... crap", I said. "That's not right".

Going through my mind a bit, I quickly realized my mistake. "Route 90 and Corydon, I mean". Whew... yay for wives... otherwise I would have found myself at the hell that is Confusion Corner before I realized my mistake, and been punished with the annoyance of driving down Corydon ToungeOut. A quick detour down Grant, and I eventually found myself at the right intersection. Deciding to try different parking, we turned East onto Corydon, and parked on whatever that first main street is there... not the back-alley. Hopping out of the car, I quickly made my way to the interesection. A few street-crossings later, and I was successfully at the place of my last failure.

Thankfully, this was one dinifra that was successful BigSmile. I had spotted the cache container when I was about 5 feet away from ground zero, and was able to make the grab in mid-stride, and keep walking. Figuring it would be the least conspicuous to stop at the bus stop (although, I wasn't sure if any buses actually stopped there on Sundays), I quickly opened up the container and tossed a nanomail ball into the container. It took me a minute to get the logbook out (seems I was having the same problem that Tracama was having), but a bit of wiggling it back and forth allowed it to be removed and opened BigSmile. And once again, I thank the fact that I have one of those Fisher Space Pens that can write at any angle, since I was able to sign the log against the side of a lamp post without any problems Smile. A quick re-rolling later (attempting to re-roll a bit tighter so the log can be removed easier... hopefully it won't just re-expand itself to end up in the exact same situation), and I had the cache closed, and ready for replacement.

Thankfully, the timing worked out such that the lights changed and traffic started moving just as I had finished closing the cache. Walking back, another quick hand-movement, and the cache was back from whence it came. Minutes later, I was back at the car, and glad to have one more cache removed from my DNF watchlist BigSmile.

Thanks for replacing the cache. These little guys are always fun to go after if you're in a hurry, or just 'happen to be there' type of thing BigSmile.

Took: Nothing
Left: Logbook entry and nanomail ball

Didn't find it 5/2/2009 by Kabuthunk
My first DNF of the day. Whaddya know... today I managed to take four (4) caches off of my DNF watchlist, and then I have to go and add one back on again ToungeOut. Well... at least I didn't add on as many as I removed ToungeOut.

In either case... I've been eyeing this cache for a while. Every time I go to Assinaboine Park, here I am, passing right beside it. It was driving me NUTS to know I was so insanely close to it on so many occasions... almost making me want to just step out during a red light and retrieve it or something ToungeOut. However, every time I drove by, I tried to visually spot the cache container, always to no avail. Thus, not knowing the 100% exact location, I wasn't about to pull the red-light method. In fact... I probably would balk at doing that regardless ToungeOut.

So I decided to find parking. Not having any idea where the closest parking was, I ended up pulling West down Corydon, and then quickly making a left turn down some residential road. I was actually pointing the right way to park for once, and it was close to the intersection. Win-win! Well... except for the DNF, but at least I know where parking is for future attempts (and there WILL be future attempts ToungeOut). Hoofing it over to the intersection, I tried to time little bursts of 10-second searches when traffic immediately beside me was going. That way, they would have to be moreso concentrating on the road then on me. Alas... no luck. Checking my palm pilot, I read the past few logs. Uh-oh... the most recent is a DNF... not a good sign with this particular series. The most recent find was still only about a week ago... so it looks like it had survived being piled up with snow over the winter. However, several logs back indicate it was magnetless, and not in it's usual spot. Ah hell.

So I set about searching every hiding spot I could think of in the area, keeping in mind a lack of magnetism. After about 15 minutes of fruitless searching, I ended up throwing in the towel Frown. The base of the "Eye" is very loose, so I don't know if that knocked it away, if it WAS there to begin with. I tried searching the leaves/grass/dirt in the immediate vicinity, and found nothing. I tried looking on the INSIDE of that skirt to no avail. I tried searching around and amongst the bases of all nearby posts (including the other half of the 'Eye'), and still I found nothing.

Looks like this cache has been re-hidden in such a way that I couldn't find it at this time. I also didn't want to spend TOO much time in the area, it being the middle of the day on Saturday. Perhaps next time, more towards the evening, when I'm biking back from Assinaboine Park or something would be a better time to take another stab at it.

In the meantime, methinks I'm going to be putting this one on my watchlist, and seeing if it's located again or has some maintenance done on it. But as I said... the base skirt is very loose, and can easily knock away the usual ICU hide style. Not entirely sure what can be done to rectify that, but perhaps using the other half of the 'Eye' could work nicely. Probably want to update the coordinates though.

Ah well... I shall return!
