Winter Friendly

The Lime Kiln is a very nice and relatively unused trail in Birds Hill Park. It can be a tricky path to follow with its more than forty crossings. It's a 7.5 km round trip starting at the Birds Hill Park Ranch parking lot. The trail is wide and flat with a surface of packed dirt in the front and grass covered in the back. The elevation ranges from 265 metres at the trail head to 240 m at the Lime Kiln. This mostly forested path has some nice features along the way including sand pits, earthen mounds and of course the Lime Kiln. There is a warm up shack half way around the trail with a vault toilet. The trail is designated for hiking and horses in summer and cross country skiing in winter. No hiking or dogs are permitted on the groomed cross-country trails in the winter. There are washrooms, a pay phone, restaurant and stables at the trail head.

I had such a hard time finding the trail head sign, I almost made this a puzzle cache! I couldn't find a good winter friendly spot closer to the sign - it's quite developed and a high muggle area. The original LKST-1 was a Spruce tree hide, but that one's been archived and replaced with this deciduous version. The container is a winter friendly, dark green, de-con container. It contains the v1 logbook. The v1 logs can be seen here: LKST-1 Looking for a Sign

Found it 4/11/2010 by Kabuthunk
Ahh, at long, long last this cache has finally been found. Ok, I'll admit I found it several weeks ago and haven't logged it until now... but you get the point. Ever since my previous attempts at finding these caches last September, I've been wanting to to back to knock these guys off. And when typing in plural, I mean this cache, and the nearby "LKST-1a Cookout. Since back in September of last year, when I came relatively close to the Cookout cache but turned away due to bystanders, these guys have been eating away at my mind, just BEGGING to be found since they're so close to the main road ToungeOut. And today, I decided to do something about it.

My wife and I had just finished acquiring all the information for the nearby earthcache as well as spending some time biking and rollerblading around, when we were getting ready to head home. Before heading home however, I let her know that I wanted to knock off a few geocaches in the area. So parking relatively nearby, I hopped out of the car and worked my way towards the paved hiking path that I've traveled a fair amount in the various times I've been here. I soon found that trying to leave the trail to make a more beeline hike through the forest was a bad idea, and quickly returned to the path until I reached... a parking lot?

I can safely say, I've never come across this parking lot before. Then again, I come to this park to relax in nature, so I tend to actively avoid going near the areas that are more heavily developed (with the exception of the swimming area). At first, I was a bit nervous to be here, since I thought that perhaps this area was only open to people with horses or something. I dunno, I've never walked around here. It seems so... restrictive because the only sides I've approached the area from are surrounded by a friggin' ELECTRIC FENCE in the middle of a provincial park. Don't mind me... that whole electric fence thing just rubs me the wrong way. There's something just... inherently wrong about it.

But anyway, having approached it from THIS side (where I've got to admit, the view is quite nice), I walked past the parking lot and quickly moved towards the coordinates. Unfortunately, I didn't notice the sign in question that this cache is apparently supposed to be pointing you near, but that's probably because I was trying to leave the area as quickly as possible. Sure enough, as I got close to ground zero, I heard several bystanders somewhere relatively nearby chatting. Not wanting to be seen skulking around the bushes, I attempted to locate them, but was unable to spot anything. Like seriously... I looked around everywhere in the remote vicinity of the direction of the voices, and didn't see a single moving creature! I swear I must have been hearing poltergeists or something ToungeOut.

Nonetheless, after having wrote off the voices as being something out of sight anyway, I quickly grabbed the cache. I had spotted it from the trail, so the actual retrieval was quite quick. A quick chainmail balling and logbook signing later, and I replaced the cache as found.

But that complete, I replaced the cache as found and quickly vacated the area. Back on the path again, I could STILL hear the mystery voices chatting about whatever. Their conversation didn't seem to skip a beat, so I'm fairly certain that wherever these mystery people where, they didn't spot me ToungeOut. And so with this cache complete, ON TO THE NEXT ONE!

Took: Nothing
Left: Logbook entry and chainmail ball
