Whew. Almost had to walk away from this one with a DNF. So my wife and I were heading out to Winkler today, since my sister's nursing graduation was being held here. Not having traveled to Winkler all that often, I wasn't sure how long it'd take. Well, I've been here a few times back when I was an insulator working in that new hospital just West of Winkler (I doubt you'll ever see it, but somewhere on a steel girder waaaaay up past the ductwork is my name "written" in silver insulating tape ), but I didn't recall how long the drive took. A quick look at Google Maps directions oh-so helpfully informed us that the drive would take just over 2 hours.

Yeah, don't trust Google Maps for times. Over 2 hours from Winnipeg my ass.

So, my wife and I arrived about an hour earlier than we had anticipated, but had quickly found the Heartland Inn where this grad ceremony was being held. After a quick stop at Tim's across the street, we were wondering how to kill some time. Checking nearby caches, I discovered that one extremely nearby was waiting to be found . One quick walk later, and I was beside Twisters. Feeling a little bit nervous about there being others around, I followed the coordinates, and hunted around a bit. Nothin'. For about 8-10 minutes, I circled around, looking for the cache. Elusive little fella. Eventually, due to me wanting to be less conspicuous and running low on time before the ceremony, I figured I'd have to pull a DNF. I was quite disappointed too, since I figured it'll likely be a long time before my next Winkler visit.

Back to the car with me, all depressed and stuff. The timing was relatively good for us to head to the ceremony right after that. An hour and a half-ish later, and myself, my wife, my sister, her husband and two kids, and my mom were all standing outside the Inn wondering what to do before the dinner portion of the ceremony (3 hours away, although my wife and I weren't staying for that half). So I’m told of this AWESOME burger joint nearby, and they decide they want to go for a quick snack.

TO TWISTERS! AGAIN !

Man, that has GOT to be arguably one of the best burgers I've ever eaten. The Mozza Bacon burger? ! Listened to some old-school music while there (little Johnny Cash, little Everly Brothers... but WTF was with Shania Twain being on there?!? Talk about 'one of these things is not like the others'. A few others were way too... not-the-right-era or genre. Safe to say I didn't play them, anyway). Anyway, I digress. After the quick meal, I was telling the others (team "Blagden") about the cache just outside this building. So the whole pack of all of us head outside to where the coordinates were pointing me earlier.

However, by this point I had had some time to ponder my previous hunt. The first time I was there, it was a rather rushed search, with more action than thinking. Now that I'd thought about it, I had figured there was oooone place I hadn't searched. Sure enough, about 2 seconds after all of us arrived, I swept my hand over the spot, and moments later the cache was in hand . Looks like Blagden got a bit of an easy find... but given that without them being there, I probably wouldn't have returned and pulled a DNF... I think it worked out well .

But yeah... mental note on eating at that place next time we're in the area.

So I managed to sign the logbook, but was only able to sign the date and my name... and those are pretty questionable to read. The log paper is EXTREMELY wet, and VERY hard to handle or write on. Worst case scenario, my signature micromail ball in there indicates our having found it . We placed the entire geocache inside a ziplock bag to try to keep it... well... from getting wetter, and replaced it as found. Hopefully it'll hold up until the logbook can be replaced.

But thanks for introducing me to the restaurant. That was truly awesome food .
