This standard cache is well camoflauged so look closely.

One of my hobbies is making ghillie suits so I decided to try camoing a geocache. Its not that hard to spot for geocachers, but will keep muggles from finding.

The cache contains a log book, writing stick, 2 stickers, a "micro pet", a ball and a green biner.

Please place where found. Thanks!

At long, LONG last, this cache has finally fallen to my nearly-all-seeing eyes (ignoring past attempts ToungeOut).

I had just finished tackling find 496 at Assinaboine Park, and was debating where to go for some more geocaching. However, the one that I got at the park was a previous DNF... and it felt quite good to finally have it off my watchlist. After all, I've been getting a lot of emails telling me that others have been finding it. And then I remembered that The Ghillie Cache has been generating a healthy number of emails from others who have found it. Since this cache is so far away from where I live though (just South of Fermor), it's a healthy chunk of time to go way out to St. James.

But Assinaboine Park where I already was... why, that's 3/4 of the way there already! Determined to knock another few caches off my DNF watchlist, I decided to dinifra as many as I could today. Hence, I hopped into the car and headed out to this one.

Now, I've never actually been inside Wholesale Sports, so I decided to wander on in and see if perhaps I could locate the person who had placed the cache, just out of blind curiosity. To say the least, the store reminded me quite a bit of S.I.R. Moreso than Cabala's, anyway. I looked around a bit, checking out the knives, GPS accessories (mental note on where to get replacement belt clips, since little spring-loaded plastic tab on those wear out so easily), and binoculars. One of the guys at the binocular area asked if I needed any help, and I asked him if he knew who geocached there. He said someone USED to work there, but had since left. In fact, he was fairly certain that when said person left, they took the geocache with them, and it was just listed on the geocaching website still by accident.

However, having read previous logs not long ago, I recalled that it had been found about 3 days ago. I told him this, and he was almost shocked that it was still there. Thus, after he offered me luck, I took off towards the coordinates. At least this way, if any employees saw me, I'd at least have some backup information to give them if they asked me what I was doing. I'd at LEAST have the conversation with someone who knew said geocache had existed. In either case, noone asked me anything, and I don't even recall seeing anyone leave or enter the store while I was looking. Then again, I was looking for all of about 2 minutes. And I gotta say... right now is about the best possible time to look for the cache! It's not coated snow-white like the rest of everything in winter (or potentially frozen in place), and it's not like when I LAST looked for it... everything grown in like a jungle. Today it was nice out, the foliage hadn't filled in yet, and I was able to spot the cache with relative ease. But still... MAN would this be well hidden in the middle of summer! Heck, I probably bumped into it a few times during a previous hunting! So I signed the logbook, dropped in a chainmail ball, and retrieved a Backpacking Bear travelbug. Mission finally accomplished, after this cache plagued me with DNFs for so long BigSmile.

I decided to return into the store to let that employee know that it was still there, in case others asked. However, I couldn't find him! I thought it was a bit odd, since I spoke with him like... 5 minutes ago. I meandered around for a good 20 minutes, but still he never returned to the binocular counter, or to anywhere I wandered. In the end, I gave up... for all I know, his shift just ended. If anyone knows the younger, kinda shorter guy who watches the binoculars (he was wearing a yellow shirt today if that counts for anything), let him know that the cache is still there ToungeOut.

Thanks for the cache! It put me through the wringer trying to find this over the past multiple attempts, but I'm glad to have finally found it BigSmile.

Man, a second failed dinifra in one day?!? This is killing me! I hunted for three caches today after work, and only located one of them. The day started on a DNF, and ended on a DNF... it hurts, I tells ya!

But with this cache, I may be using the 'phone a friend' option for a bit of advice. Mainly for a 'whate side of the fence should I be on' type of thing, since at this point I've hunted both of 'em. For being a 1.5 difficulty, 1 terrain cache, I've GOTTA be doing something wrong on this one. Something with stats like that shouldn't be putting up THAT much of a fight. So yeah... I get the feeling I'm going about this cache an entirely wrong way or something. And like... EVERYONE is finding this thing except me! But the only reason I actually stopped to hunt on this second side is because the business on this side was closed by the time I got there. The light was fading (and my flashlight batteries were mostly dead, to boot), but I had relatively employee-less access to the cache area. Although when I parked, I had to wait for one final employee sitting on the sidewalk beside the building to be picked up by someone before I got out of my car. After that, it was clear sailing... until the end, but I'll mention that later.

I headed to this cache on a whim, not having all that much time to search for it. And by 'not that much', I mean 'about 20 minutes'. And boy, I used all of those 20 minutes in a sweat-coated, crouch-walking hunt that frustrated and confounded me. Seeing as I had finished hunting the first side of the fence in July, I started out today on the other side. Besides, the last time I was there, the GPS was trying to tell me that it was JUST on the other side of the fence. Naturally, this time around it kept trying to convince me that it was 5 meters onto the FIRST side of the fence that I tried. MAKE UP YOUR MIND, GPS!

But given that I didn't have that much time, I wasn't in the mood to make my way from one side, have to backtrack all the way to the start of the fence, and work my way to the coordinates on the other side multiple times. Also, I was trying to remain inconspicuous, so doing that would be a little bit disadventageous.

So, keeping my conspicuity to a minimum, I searched and searched and searched. And then I searched some more. After about 15 minutes, I checked Cachemate to see if any of the newest 'found' logs would help me at all... nope. In fact, since it says they're late logging it, I don't know if they re-adjusted the find date, or if that was perhaps from before I hunted for it. Probably the former, though. One thing I DID notice however when I got home to type this now was that one of the gallery pictures, and its accompanying text may have been a bit useful. Although, the image looks to have been during the day, so I suppose both sides of the fence could have been 'open' at the time... but I'm thinking I may have been on the correct side this time around.

In either case, I searched for a bit longer before eventually calling it quits. My time had run out, the light was fading fast, and I was hot, sweaty, and thirsty. Dejected, I left the cache area and headed back to the car. And not a moment too soon! When I got to the car, some 'impact security' vehicle had JUST pulled into the Costco parking lot and stopped about 30 feet from my car. I'm pretty sure they didn't see where I came from, just that I was walking towards my car. After I got in and started to leave, the security vehicle finally started driving again, and I thankfully didn't see it again. I don't know if some cleaning-crew in the business saw me and called them, or if someone called them because my car was parked there when it was closed... but I got there and left before anyone tried to approach me or question me.

So next time I go after this... again, after I get some tips on this one... I'll hopefully have a lot faster a search to avoid any potential problems.

I shall return!

With my wife at Red River College for the evening, I thought it would be nice to attempt a few geocaches before having to pick her up. With some time to kill, a GPS in my hands, and a sack of chainmail balls to disperse, I checked what caches were nearby. This one in particular stood out for 'on the way to Red River'.

First things first though, as I've mentioned, I'm quite paranoid at best. Not being familiar with the area, I didn't want to go for anything TOO out of the way, and nothing that would be immediately amongst random pedestrians. This cache seemed to fit the bill. The GPS's map indicated it was along a railroad line which I could follow (in theory), and ghillie suits are awesome.

Upon finding nearby parking at the Costco, I quickly discovered that there was no such railroad here anymore. MAN, Garmin really needs to update their maps (or whoever makes the maps I'm using... I think it's Garmin, anyway). The USA gets a new version every year, but the most recent one for Canada is 1992 or something ridiculous. Like c'mon... what the hell?

But anyway... it appeared that a fence-based object appeared to run along what was once a railroad track. This led me to a bit of a problem... which side do I pick? I decided to attempt the less-active side, since one of the establishments was closed, and the one on the other side was open. Working my way towards the coordinates, I began hunting around. I knew it'd be camouflaged well, so I kept a pretty good eye out. Unfortunately, I turned up nothing.

However, my search was paused several times while I stayed dead silence, hopefully out of sight from various individuals in the empty parking lot. On three separate occasions... in the span of about 15 minutes... a vehicle pulled into the parking lot... several obscenities were shouted, and they peeled away, tires screeching. Three different vehicles, at different times. I haven't the foggiest what they were doing since noone else was visible, but given their apparent mood, I didn't particularly want to be spotted by them. At first I thought the first vehicle was security or something, but with the shouting and tire-screeching away, I kinda figured it wasn't at that point. Then again, I think I would have preferred that be a security vehicle.

In either case, spotting nothing on that side, I worked my way back and tried to get closer on side 2. This however failed, since the establishment on THAT side was still open, and people were constantly coming and going. I DID however spot several railroad spikes and metal... things that the spikes go through. Evidently, a bit of the railroad there remains ToungeOut.

But yeah... looks like I'll have to go after this one preferably after everything is close... or before it opens on a Sunday or something. If anyone could let me know if either of the two places are familiar with the geocache, and wouldn't like... call the police seeing me poke around the bushes there, lemme know. I might come in during the week if they would inherently know what I'm there for ToungeOut.

I shall return, I shall dinifra!
