A quick cache in a St. Boniface park.

I was surprised to see this beautiful park in St. Boniface had no caches in it. The cache is a small lock & lock container with a few small trade items. Bring the kids along to enjoy the playground area nearby.

Apparently a local resident has set up shelter very near this cache. Hopefully they move along soon, but please be careful if you are going after this cache.

This cache was created to add to the number of QUALITY caches hidden in Manitoba. It is an official cache in the MBGA Cache Splash event.
Category 36: Kid-friendly cache or a cache hidden by a kid.

Found it 9/27/2008 by Kabuthunk
Fourth find of the day. I've actually been a little leery about going after this one for quite a while now. Ever since My June 14th of 2007, when I saw that the area was home to one of the homeless, I've generally avoided the area. Last thing I need is for a homeless guy to think I'm rooting through this stuff. That was of course, over a year ago however.

So I was in the midst of finding the various portions of the "Canadian Multi-Cache", of which three pieces of data needed dwelled inside this park. At first, I didn't even realize that this was the same park I had walked past in 2007. I was just wandering along, collecting the information for the multi-cache. Looking at my GPS, I see that there's a cache nearby. Hmm... strange. Telling the GPS to direct me to this GPS showed that I was all of abot 20 meters from it ToungeOut.

And then the area rung a bell. They have done a LOT of work to this area. It used to be one massive bushy-type area, that was dense enough for a bum to have build a home there, and not be TOO ridiculously noticeable (although it was pretty hard to miss, even from the other side of the par ToungeOut). Upon arriving this time, that area has been COMPLETELY pruned and cleaned up BigSmile. It's wide-open, the trees are free of any clotheslines/etc, and the several bushes around it have shrunk to about 1/4 their old size!

At which point I got worried. Uh-oh... when did the area get pruned? Did it take the cache with it? It didn't SEEM that recent, and apparently the last find (that I could see in my palm pilot) was from Sept. 8th. Probably was found after the renovations to the area, since none of it screamed 'less than a month after trimming'. Going closer, I found the cache almost instantly!

Actually, the first place I tried was a dead-end. Y'see... the seeds off the trees here... those little wing-looking things... seem to enjoy jamming in clumps inside every crevace. Hence I first tried a few crevaces that had been packed with these floaty things, thinking that was natural camouflage. Yeah, no such luck... those were both dead ends. About 2 seconds after that however, I spotted the cache Smile. It was very clearly, blatantly visible though, and I was quite surprised it hadn't gone missing! I get the feeling that Skil101 found it after me today, since the last log prior to me was SleepyCheeseMonkey. Hopefully he re-hid it as I did... giving it a natural-looking camouflage. It was... pretty blatant and conspicuous on its own there. However, it'd probably been sitting that way since Sept. 8th... so who knows.

But anyway, I signed up the logbook and tossed in a chainmail ball. Hiding it better than I found it, I continued onwards going after the parts of the aformentioned multi-cache.

Thanks for taking me back to this park again. It's actually quite nice, when you take the time to wander around it. The only minor annoyance was parking. A buck fourty in change, and I had less than an hour at the park! It's free on Sunday though, so future cachers without any change (the thing didn't seem to like my Credit Card either for some reason), Sunday's the time to get the cache for free. Or just... y'know... walk, bike, or bus over ToungeOut.

Took: Nothing
Left: Logbook entry and chainmail ball

Didn't feel comfortable going after this cache today. When I biked to near the vicinity in general, I noticed that there was what appeared to be a homeless person's "shelter", aka: a tarp, along with various possessions inside the bushy area.

Not wanting to go into there, or even anywhere near there (I'm quite paranoid by nature, and grew up in the country... I'm not used to things like this), I decided to give looking for it a pass and continued onwards. Logged as a 'note', since I didn't even get close enough to even start to look for the cache.

Basically, I just wanted to toss a random warning to other cachers going after this that when you go, there may or may not be a homeless person's home around here, and to just watch yourself.
