05/04/2014 By Kabutroid I've really got to get out to more events, this was fun as hell. Although I don't know if 'event' would be the word I'd use... more like a mass brunch . Showed up a few minutes late, but thankfully there was still table space available. Fate seems to enjoy trying to force me to sit awkwardly off to the side half the time I manage to make it to one of these .
It started out pretty rough however. Seriously Winnipeg... any time you want to get around to patching those potholes on St. James would be fantastic. I REALLY wish the roads had been a lot emptier, since I couldn't quite swerve around the bigger ones... and I swear there was more of those than “small” ones. I'm not sure how bad it is in other parts of the city, but so far this year, this one's got the record for worst spring road for me. AFTER dodging around and/or ruining the alignment of my car, I eventually arrived at Smitty's, and was pleased to discover that I wasn't the only one to arrive late.
And the rest... was a blast. Sat down and pretty much was immediately absorbed into various conversations. I'm kinda crap with remembering names though, so sorry in advance. Seemed to bounce just about everywhere, from lamenting the plight of the poor waitress to cache container sizes, to growing up in the country. Generally just a really fun morning with fun people talking about fun stuff.
Seemed to take a while to get out drinks, but once they had that rolling, they kept up with the ton of demands pretty well (with some added amusement of playing “who's food is this”). We drained their coffee carafe just about instantly after it was but down, but a replacement came pretty much instantly. Come to think of it, I imagine this event probably put a decent strain on their coffee makers. Eventually, the various travelbugs and geocoins were broken out (still kicking myself for forgetting mine at home... was specifically thinking about bringing it yesterday), and I got to discover some really interesting ones. I can safely say this is the first time I've seen a trackable magazine and an etched marble type trackable. And with any luck, I'll be able to drop off that other one that I picked up in Mexico when I go down there next week... see if we can't put a few more miles on that sucker.
And sorry GG... I was actually considering wearing the chainmail today, but actually left it behind pretty much entirely because I thought this was going to be a type of event where everyone would be focusing on one person for the most part, and I didn't want to draw attention from that. Oh well, next time (depending on how quick I go), hopefully I'll be able to break out the new shirt that's in the works. Not too sure about your suggestion on the front design though .
Overall though, probably one of the most fun events I've managed to make it to. I'm not sure how much talk there was of making cache containers though. Although I'll have to send a message after logging this... I want in on that 'make a cache container' thing. I'm still kinda disappointed that Early Maridia cache disappeared, and wouldn't mind a convenient opportunity to see if I can top it. Or at the bare minimum, have fun just building one in general. And I've REALLY gotta get off my butt and find a place for that puzzle cache I've got basically ready.
Took: Coffee? Left: Chainmail ball, but no logbook entry due to lack of logbook. We'll have to make do with the chainmail ball and witness testimony
