Mr. Reachy

It is with great sorrow that we announce the passing of our
trusted and beloved friend, Mr. Reachy after a lengthy battle with
spinal injuries at the youthful age of 5 years on May 28, 2010.
Mr. Reachy is survived by his identical siblings Mr. Pokey and
Mr. Stretchy, his cousin Blue Reachy, his roommates Mr. Poley, Ms
Battery-Bag, Stabby Screwdriver, Princess Head-Lamp and Jacques the
Monkey, his co-workers Garmin Nuvi 265WT and Garmin GPSMap 60cx,
his extended family of Shakey Light, Snake Light, Bright Light, and
Black Light, the twins Left Rubber-Boot and Right Rubber-Boot, his
superhero friends Mr. Magneto and The Reflector, and his best
friend and life companion, dani_carriere. He was predeceased by
co-workers Magellan GPS310 and Garmin eTrex Vista, his suns
Two-Mill Candlepower and Ten-Mill Candlepower, superhero friend The
Reflectionator, and countless AA and AAA batteries.
Mr. Reachy came into this world on February 3, 2005. At the
time, he was known only as Reachy Stick and assisted with his first
cache retrieval in La Verendrye Park in St. Boniface. He was around
2 feet (60 cm) long with a bright red two-prong claw at one end and
a trigger at the other. He was always available to reach up into
trees, or down into holes. At times, he was requested to pick up
caches that were up to 5 pounds in weight, which he did quite well.
He often volunteered in cache site clean-up while out on the trail.
Whether it was to reach the unreachable, to lift the very heavy, or
to assist with the CITO of a cache location, Reachy never
complained.
In early, 2010 we noticed Reachy was more flexible than his
normal self and on closer examination found that he suffered from a
fractured neck. To aid in his recovery, he retired to
dani_carriere's office where he was asked to do no more lifting,
only the occasional paper retrieval work. Alas, it was one last
8.5x11" bond that finally did him in, and his neck was permanently
severed. Many tears were shed over our loss, but we know Mr. Reachy
is now happily retrieving caches in Reachy Heaven.
The family would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr.
Reachy's many friends and fans, and especially Mr. Pokey who will
be taking over Mr. Reachy's Geocaching role. In accordance with
Reachy's wishes a private family memorial service was held on June
1st, 2010.
In lieu of flowers, the family would like you to find Mr.
Reachy's cache and sign the "Guest Book". If at all possible,
please post a picture of you with your own reachy stick in your
log.

Reach high, for stars lie hidden in your soul. Dream deep,
for every dream precedes the goal.
Mr. Reachy, you will be missed.

Extreme stealth is required in this high traffic area
Initial cache contents are a log book and 2 writing sticks.
Please don't put the pencils in the baggie because the holes they'd
create would render the baggie useless. Thanks!
Logging
Etiquette: Geocache hiders sometimes go through a great deal of
planning to place their caches. As a result, they'd like to hear
your feedback on whether you liked or disliked any aspect of the
hide, or if you feel that some cache maintenance is required.
Single word, acronym, or emoticon logs may be easier when you have
a lot of caches to log, but it doesn't tell the hider or other
finders anything about your adventure (or lack thereof) in finding
the cache. Please keep this in mind when entering your log. Additional Waypoints FO29XX2 - Where it all began N 49° 53.163 W 097° 07.411 This waypoint was the original location of the La Verendrye Cache by skaven. It was Mr. Reachy's first foray into geocaching. If you see the site today, you can't tell that there was a huge pine tree with a park bench below it. In fact, there's no sign of where this cache was at all. Add cache to watch list

1 Logs: 1
01/05/2012 By Kabutroid Well shoot. I wish I had read the cache description prior to going after this, since I could have taken a picture of me with my reaching device. However, come to think of it that may not be as possible as I thought, since my own reaching device tends to be whatever makes itself available at the time. Either myself, or some contraption composed of any nearby dead branches, string, and wire. Basically, my reaching devices tend to exist purely on an as-needed basis, and upon completion of their task, are quickly stripped of their wire and string associates, and returned from whence they came. I think the longest one I ever used ended up being for a cache that’s unfortunately bit the dust, which ended up requiring two of the longest branches I could find in the area wired together... and even that was iffy. Honestly, I’m still surprised I managed to pull that off without my feet leaving the ground.
So hopefully that bit reminiscing about my most famous (or infamous perhaps) Mr. Reachy will suffice for this cache. Thinking about it certainly brought back some amusing memories, anyway.
But on with this cache! I had primarily wanted to find a cache today... purely for the sake of finding a cache today. Literally. I had found a cache on April 30th, and for no reason other than that, I wanted to find a cache on May 1st as well. Thusly, I brought my geocaching kit with me to work, and planned to tackle a cache on the way home. However, disaster almost struck when my wife was stuck working late, and called me towards the end of my shift asking me to pick her up from work. Thankfully, once I arrived there she was fine with going home being delayed slightly while I went after a cache... which in this case ended up being THIS cache... the most convenient cache between her work and home. A quick drive around the park later, and I was out of the car while my wife opted instead to stay there and read. Can’t say I blame her... it was damp and chilly out .
But... on to the important stuff... the cache! I quickly discovered that I needed to stick to stepping only on grass to avoid my work shoes being completely inundated with mud, but soon found my way to ground zero. I had to kinda meander around for about a minute while I waited for a number of pedestrians to make their way elsewhere. As luck would have it, after this initial burst of bystanders going past, a blank area where nobody was walking in the park in my direction, and I didn’t see anyone on the sidewalk heading my way. Not letting such an opportunity go to waste, I quickly attempted to find the cache. Thankfully this happened quite quickly, since the coordinates were bang-on. I glimpsed a corner of the cache container from its hiding spot, and quickly retrieved it. After I had found a place to park myself to sign the log, a few more bystanders went past, so it looks like it was good that I had found it so quickly. One chainmail ball and signature later, and the cache was closed back up again. The paper almost seemed mildly damp however... not sure if that’s due to someone finding it and opening it while it was raining though, since the container itself seems like something that should have no problems keeping water out of it. Could be wrong though, I’m not familiar with this specific container. Looks good, though.
So it took only a few seconds more before another opening in the pedestrian traffic opened up, and I was able to replace the cache and hide it as I had found it. Given the cache was found again afterwards (I’m logging this about a week late), my hiding job was clearly successful to bystanders .
Thanks for the cache here... I’ve always liked going through this park .
Took: Nothing Left: Logbook entry and chainmail ball
EDIT: Whoops, turns out it hasn’t been found since... mistook 04/05 for 05/04 . Well, hopefully it’s well hidden.
