I must admit, there's probably a very decent chance that I wouldn't have found this cache had it not been for a certain someone who perhaps had assisted me a bit in locating it. And by ‘very decent chance’, I mean ‘almost certainty’. For one, it’s a bit of a rarity for me to be in this area of the city (with the exception of a friend’s place vaguely nearby-ish, but that usually involves having very little time for caching at the time). Second, it’s in a bit of a residential type area, which me being a rather shy individual (and by ‘rather’, I mean ‘extraordinarily’), would probably steer clear of. Thirdly, my GPS seemed to decide that the geocache itself was about 10 to 15 meters away from where it actually was located.
BUT... all that aside, I had a bit of a secret weapon to assist in my locating of said cache. I had the help... of The Widget. As it turns out, there was today a geocaching event that I particularly wanted to go to for the sake of obtaining an 11-11-11 Multi event geocoin. Given I work today, I had planned to head there straight after work. Widget as well wanted to attend said event, but needed a ride. I figured that since I was at least in that side of the city (as compared to where I live), I might as well just swing out a bit further in order to snag her and take her with.
Ahh, but how to locate her place? It seems as though a certain geocache... perhaps this one... may be very closely associated with her home. Thusly, she said to just go to this geocache, and after work that’s exactly what I did.
Although I still have no clue how you knew I had arrived when I was still on the road. I didn’t think my car was visible from the cache... but eh. Apparently Widget is psychic... which may explain why she’s good at finding caches
.
Anyhoo, as I approached ground zero (and began walking past it... see point three in the first paragraph), Widget came out and began to play the hot/cold game with me, slowly but surely guiding me towards the geocache. She also helpfully guided me away from doing things that would have likely made a horrible mess
.
I am however still baffled at the purpose of that little mini statue thing embedded in the ground there.
But I digress. As she led me around here and there, I slowly began to home in on the container. Not long after that, I had the cache firmly in my hand, and eventually got it open. Really awesome cache container by the way. Like seriously... I’ve seen a number of geocaches hidden in a somewhat similar manner, but this is probably one of the best versions of that that I’ve seen so far. Definitely had me fooled until I was literally staring right at it from a foot away. After being amazed at the container for a bit, I had the logbook in my hand (quite a full logbook it seems), I signed up the logbook and dropped in a chainmail ball, Widget grabbed her jacket and prepared to head out to the event.
A bit of poking around in the cache, I found a geocoin, which I collected to move it along. Strangely, said geocoin was listed as being located in “By The Grace” cache, and says it’s been there since October. So that’s another good deed for the day... getting it located and having a fresh log so the cache owner knows it still exists.
So all in all, it’s been a pretty good day. Well, aside from the work day itself, but the day was made significantly better by finding a cache, fixing a geocoin, hanging out with Widget and soon after a pile of other geocachers, getting my own event geocoin, and all in all having an awesome afternoon for the middle of the week. If this is any kind of indication, the second half of the week should be pretty decent
