an easy terrain cache although the road getting you there might have a terrain rating of 2 (not quite off road, but a dirt and bumpy one). follow the signs from 307 for "coco's cabanas." you will probably have to pass through a rope gate near Azul Fives, just tell them you are going to "coco's cabanas."

coco's is a great out of the way place and offers free access to a tranquil section of beach. Helmut is a first class chef and his wife Silvia makes margaritas that are well worth the bumpy road to get there.

WOOH! First geocache ever found in Mexico, which by no coincidence is also the very first time I've ever been to Mexico. Or anywhere other than Canada or the USA, in all actuality. So when my brother was making plans to have a destination wedding in Mexico, I thought it would be a rather convenient time to knock off a third country for places I've found geocaches. Actually, this trip was a really big jump for me... the furthest South I've ever been prior to this was in Minneapolis, Minnesota.

So after much planning and saving and saving some more and booking time off work, the day finally came on May 19th where we hopped on a plane and landed somewhere significantly more awesome than where we left. After all of the necessities of getting through customs, etc, we spent a few days getting to know where things are, meeting up with the family and friends already there, and eating and drinking our faces off because it's all inclusive BigSmile. Added note: I REALLY wish they had those swim-up bars back at home here... those were awesome.

But so, many a trinket was purchased (on the beach at the resort, in the resort shop, and in Playa del Carmen), and... well... a little bit of a preparation was made for my brother's wedding. Everything was already taken care of for that pretty much ahead of time, so the morning on the day of the wedding (taking place in the afternoon), my sister (BlackCat Firecracker) and I had planned to tackle this geocache which was oh-so conveniently about 500 meters South of the main resort beach.

So it ended up being a group of 4 of us... myself, my sister, her boyfriend Jesus (they both live in Pueblo) who was EXTREMELY interested in this mysterious hunt for “treasure” (he's never even heard of the term geocaching prior to this, nor even the concept when we described it), and my friend Jordan (who's at least heard of Geocaching, but never seen one), who came along at the last second for kicks, since he happened to pass by us at the right time. So hoofing it down the beach, we come across what I can only assume is the buildings for another resort. We let Jesus take the reins and follow the GPS. Like all first-timers, he tried to follow the arrow absolutely exactly, and was about to try to cut between some huts before we had him follow the beach a bit more before we found a better entrance to make our way to ground zero. Once we worked our way to the coordinates, the hunt began! It was probably for the best that I happened to find the geocache relatively quickly, since Jesus was starting to poke around things... probably not meant to be poked around. Once I showed him the cache container, he was amazed BigSmile. We took a number of pictures, which when I can get them from my sister's and Jesus' camera, I'll post here.

So a bit of celebrating take place with pictures and whatnot, and I signed the logbook for myself and Blackcat Firecracker (the others didn't have geocaching names yet, but if they do eventually, I hope you'll allow them to log it). We traded my signature chainmail ball for a little ball-bearing puzzle thing that Jesus really wanted. We were also very amused by the fact that one of the items in there was a Canadian quarter... about the last thing we expected to see in Mexico ToungeOut. Once I placed the container back in place, we headed back up the beach, to spend the rest of our glorious wedding/vacation relaxing, soaking up sun (surprisingly no sunburn for this pale-white Canadian, but reeeeally close in some spots), and being a groomsman for my brother later in the day... which ended up gorgeous and sunny.

Thanks for the geocache in a convenient location for our resort. It was awesome fun, and hopefully we may have a few new geocachers in the making Smile. We definitely MUST come to Mexico again BigSmile.
