Gameboy

Portable console of choice

All of the Gameboy and Gameboy advance games arranged on a wooden table, ranging from Pokemon games, Qix, Super Mario Land, Tetris, Metroid 2, Super Mario Land 2, Warioland 2, Radar Mission, and classic NES games Metroid and Xevious on the Gameboy advance, among others.

The original Gameboy games all inside their plastic protective cases, including a custom built protective case for Pokemon Pinball.Protective plastic cases on the Gameboy Advance games.

The foam Gameboy carry case with all of the games arranged in velcro slots on the right, batteries and accessories in the middle, and the Gameboy and Gameboy Advance on the left, and in the inner lid is a sleeve holding the receipt for the original Gameboy and a Mew event collection card.
Ahh, Gameboy. The very first thing that comes to mind with this is an old creation of the past. Back in the early 90's, I literally carved the letters for the word "Gameboy" out of wooden cutoff blocks that we got as scrap from a lumber yard (we had a wood-burning house furnace back then, and one year we did that instead of cutting and splitting logs. The logs are better btw), and that was kinda awesome.

The second thing that comes to mind was brought to mind thanks to various posts on Reddit, of people reminiscing about playing games in the back seat of their parents' car, and as the sun set, only being able to play in a start and stop manner from the light of the passing street lamps. Just... incredible memories.

Now, many of my original cartridges have since been traded in over the years, when I upgraded to new consoles, some games I remember having once had were Heiankyo Alien, QBillion, Stargate, Daedalian Opus, Mortal Kombat, Alien 3, and Killer Instinct. A small handful of them have stayed with me original since the beginning, the Pokémons, Metroid II, Yars' Revenge (yup, I love that game so much I have the original Atari 2600 game as well as this one), and all of the Gameboy Advance games I have are original. The rest I all re-bought generally in the recent past! I just recently re-bought the original Gameboy, which started the whole re-acquisition of many (and new ones as well, Warioland 2 is brand new to me!), which started that whole endeavour.

I do have my original Gameboy Advance, still stored in that blue box, itself amusingly having been crafted from a Labatt Blue beer case. And yes, while that does also play original Gameboy games as well, something is just... lost in the conversion to a clearer, colour screen, especially with Metroid II: Return of Samus. It's just... far more atmospheric, much more murky and incredible in original black and green, the music fits it more.

Now, I did have most of the later handheld consoles too, like I said traded in over the years for the next new console (the GBA remained because it could play both GBA and Gameboy games), but honestly I can't even remember any of the games for the later consoles. Looking it up just now, yeah there was Metroids, there was Big Brain Academy, New Super Mario Bros, a whole lot of Pokémen. "Eh" is what I think when I think of those ones really. I can't even remember what was after the DS, 3DS it looks like, I think there was a cool game on there. Never had a switch, haven't actually had a television console for over a decade, I had a PS4 for a short time, Nintendo Wii was my last Nintendo tv console. Maybe it's because I was older by then, maybe it was the relentless beatdown of life, my survival mode and homelessness, who knows. But original Gameboy? All of these are gold. I still need to get Warioland 1 just to complete the Super Mario Land/6 Golden Coins/Warioland 2 series. There also exists Warioland 3 and 4 apparently, so I'll keep my eyes open. Donkey Kong Land was epic, I wouldn't mind the original Kirby or Gameboy Megaman. Wouldn't say no to re-acquiring Stargate if I should come across it. Oohh, Alleyway I had once, never got too far into that, INCREDIBLY hard game, just your usual block breaker game but the visuals were beautiful and the movement was butter smooth. Wouldn't re-acquire it, but great respect to it lol.

So yes, Gameboy. And Gameboy Advance. And I doubt I'll get any newer handhelds past that, they just weren't as memorable to me. The two-screen thing kinda annoyed me when I first got it, there being this "empty" space between the screens where you infer a ball is going in the pinball games, kinda annoyed me that there wasn't a screen there, and smartphones came out later lol. Don't really play any games on the phone actually, I like my physical buttons to push.

On a random note, I also got Britney's Dance Beat for the Gameboy, which dwells in my Britney altar, so that kinda sorta fits as a cross between this, the Classics page, and the Britney Spears collection. It showed up kinda in the middle of the re-acquisitions, but isn't sitting in the Gameboy case of course.

What game will show up next? It'll show up below!
